Visualizing Health:
The Science and Application of Medical Thermography

Medical thermography, also known as digital infrared thermal imaging (DITI), is a non-invasive imaging technique used to detect and visualize changes in skin temperature. It works by capturing infrared radiation emitted from the body’s surface and converting it into a visible image.

The basic principle behind thermography is that changes in blood flow and metabolism often manifest as changes in skin temperature. For instance, areas of inflammation or increased blood flow may appear warmer, while areas with reduced blood flow may appear cooler.

Medical thermography is used in various medical fields, including:

  • Breast health: Thermography is used to detect changes in breast tissue temperature that may indicate the presence of abnormal blood vessel patterns associated with breast cancer.
  • Pain assessment: Thermography can be used to assess musculoskeletal injuries and chronic pain conditions by visualizing areas of inflammation or abnormal blood flow.
  • Vascular health: It can help in assessing vascular disorders by detecting changes in blood flow patterns and temperature distribution.
  • Neurology: In some cases, thermography is used in neurology to evaluate conditions such as complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS) by assessing temperature differences between affected and unaffected limbs.
  • Oral Health: Thermography can assist in detecting potential areas of oral infection or conditions such as temporomandibular joint disorder (TMJ) by identifying areas of inflammation in the jaw.

Medical thermography is non-invasive and radiation-free, making it an extremely valuable health assessment tool. However, it’s important to note that while thermography can detect temperature differences, it does not provide a definitive diagnosis on its own. It is often used in conjunction with other diagnostic tests and clinical evaluations to provide a comprehensive assessment of a patient’s condition.

I found the thermography process totally painless and actually pleasant. When I think of my Mammograms, I shudder! I plan to use this method every year to help safeguard myself.

Life changing. I am so glad I discovered thermography as a safe, accurate way to detect health issues early in the body, including inflammation and cancer. I had my first thermography screening with Shanna Rivera in November 2016 and I have been seeing her for a regular 6-month follow-up ever since. Shanna is always very professional throughout the entire process, including the follow-up phone call and she is extremely knowledgeable about achieving optimum health. I highly recommend her.

Victoria Bear

Great thermography experience. I've been doing thermography for at least six years and did some with a practitioner that didn't have the higher resolution camera (which I wasn't aware of) so the images were worthless! I found out this by going to BTI! Make sure you go to a professional and they are definitely one with the right equipment for the scans! Save your life and get a thermography exam today!

Iris S.

I have been using breast thermography for a long time. The entire body can find things that are normal and things that are abnormal. This way the thermography can find what must be taken care of.

Joyce Stech

Very thorough and professional. Would recommend to everyone to be proactive on your health by this method. Very thorough and professional.

Deborah C.

Hello. My experience of a full body thermography with Janelle was very easy and pleasant. I am extremely health conscious and consider this screening to be safe and important in my overall health and prevention. I will tell others and will do this again myself.

Jane S.

Knowledgeable and Professional. Shanna is very knowledgeable and I always look forward to her sharing great information with me. Very professional and kind.

Shirely Prendergast

Great service and followup. Signing up for a full body detox with Shanna was something that I needed. I struggled through our first couple of sessions but she put me right back on track. By our last session I was pumped that I had met "most" goals and was eager to set new ones. It is most certainly a fantastic service that was tailored to my needs. I look forward to sending her updates on my progress. I highly recommend.

Excellent. Truth in healthcare. My thermographer, Shanna, gave me a REAL way to get healthy based on my thermography report and on her exceptional, and vast knowledge of alternative therapies. These therapies should not be called "alternative". The thermography report and experience of having Shanna review it with me is something you will never find in "conventional" medicine. But I know it's the truth, and it's the way to prevent illness and be healthy. I'm looking forward to taking her suggestions.

I just completed my third Thermography with Flow Well and am always pleased with the care and follow up Shanna and Janelle provide. It’s not only a service that allows you, the client, to receive and track vital information about your physical health ...it allows you a basis to speak more intelligently and informed to your medical staff, thus making educated decisions and choices together,as a team. I highly recommend Flow Well. The detailed suggestions received are priceless.

What to expect during your thermography appointment

  • Preparation: Once you schedule your appointment, you will receive a confirmation email with new patient intake forms to fill out and protocols to follow. The protocols advise to avoid certain activities that could affect your body temperature, such as vigorous exercise, consuming caffeine, or using lotions or creams on the skin prior to the appointment.
  • Arrival: When you arrive for your appointment, you’ll check in with reception and wait for your technician to bring you back to be seen.
  • Procedure: Before the thermography scan begins, your technician will explain the procedure to you. You’ll discuss what will happen during the scan and go over your medical history and main concerns.
  • Acclimation: Prior to the exam, you’ll acclimate to the temperature in the exam room. You’ll be asked to remove any jewelry, clothing, or items that could interfere with the imaging process.
  • Imaging: During the thermography scan, you’ll be positioned in front of the thermography camera or imaging device. The technician will guide you through the process, ensuring that the necessary areas of your body are properly imaged. The imaging itself is painless and non-invasive.
  • Post-Imaging: After the imaging is complete, you may resume your normal activities immediately. There’s no downtime or recovery period associated with thermography.
  • Results: Your thermography images will be analyzed and interpreted by a team of doctors known as Thermologists. Your results will be ready within 3-5 business days. You will review your results with a doctor and your technician.
  • Follow-Up: Your recommendation for your follow up exam will be noted in your report. Your follow up exams are necessary to monitor changes over time and ensure the best preventive healthcare.

Thermography Saves Lives

Many patients come to see us due to a member of their family getting a cancer diagnosis. Statistically, 80% of breast cancer cases do not have any family history. This means everyone should be utilizing Medical Thermography as a preventive screening tool.

Women who are diagnosed with breast cancer in their 20’s or 30’s are less likely to survive because there is not a standard screening for this age group in the conventional medicine model. These women often have young children and should not go without being screened due to the Mammogram guidelines that start screening women at age 40.

Thermography is an excellent analysis for people of all ages. Kids under 16 get Thermography at a significantly lower cost. Back in 2014, a technician with BTI started scanning kids in his office and found breast cancer in an 11 year old. Thermography is safe at any age and should be utilized during annual health checks. Our youngest patient is 2 and our oldest patient is 96!

Using Thermography to monitor and improve your health is an excellent tool for your preventive care journey.

DO YOU HAVE QUESTIONS?

Frequently Asked Questions

Our Certified Thermography Technicians follow particular protocols for your screening:

The room should be set up correctly (68-72 degrees and no direct sunlight).
Thermography is performed ideally in the nude (thong or jockstrap is ok but not preferred to check the skin everywhere) because clothes and hair hide accurate heat signatures. Privacy screening is used for men.
You will be asked to acclimate for about 10 minutes in a private room without your clothes on to get your skin temperature to a definable level. Your clothing holds a heat signature on your body and we need about 10 minutes for your skin to cool down. This allows for us to take images of your true surface temperatures.

For adults we offer 3 screening types. A Breast scan or 1 region of the body, the Health Screening and the Full Body scan.

Since you use your entire body every single day, it’s ideal to start with a Full Body scan or get one at least once a year. We also recommend a Full Body scan due to all the thermographic findings we see in our patients that you can’t see with the naked eye. Cancer doubles on average every 90 days. You can monitor your entire body safely with thermography.

The Health Screening is from the pubic floor up to the top of the forehead. It excludes the arms, hands, legs and feet. Many opt for this scan to at least check out the surface temperatures over most of your major organs.

If you only want to check on one region of the body, you can do that by signing up for the Breast screening. The most popular single region is the Breast scan but we have also performed head/neck, abdomen, back, arms or legs.

After your screening, we send the images to a team of trained thermologists from PACT to have them interpret the images. When the report is ready, a consultation with a doctor will be scheduled.

After you receive your report back, schedule a review with your physician. A second review will be with a Certified Thermographic Technician. If your doctor isn't familiar with thermography you can set up a consultation with one of our thermologists for a small fee. We connect with many local doctors or doctors who offer telemedicine who use thermography in their practice on a regular basis. We are happy to help your doctor become educated or refer you to a doctor who is already very familiar with reviewing these reports.

During your screening, you’ll be standing in front of the camera and sitting in a chair in 6 - 30 different positions depending on the screening you choose. This takes approximately 10-30 mins. Appointments are 30 minutes to an hour to allow for intake form review, the screening, scheduling a follow up consult, processing the payment and answering all of your questions.

Full body scans or the scan of your choice are usually scheduled from every 3-months to once a year, depending on the results in your last thermography scan. Some findings warrant a follow up in 1 month, or 3 months and many are recommended in 6 months to establish a baseline. Those who look great or improved from their last scan receive a year follow up.

Our report turnaround time is 1-2 weeks. Most of the time we see the reports back in less than 1 week. Sometimes during the year we have busy seasons or some of our interpreting doctors may be called away on an emergency case or have life events come up which can take the return process up to 2 weeks. We offer a STAT service for anyone who has a pressing matter 2-3 business days turn around at no additional cost.

PACT discontinued the use of TH ratings in January 2012. It was found by its investigators to be outdated (c.1979) and in need of improvement. The TH rating system was based on older technology that was less accurate than today's current digital imaging and computer processing. Many of the factors that were identified with the newer imaging devices were that abnormal anatomy vascularity. This increase in factors raised the rating for the patient to be a TH4 or TH 5 in too many cases. Risk factor assessment has been shown to be highly inaccurate. In fact 10% of TH1 patients went on to develop breast cancer.

Prioritize Your Health with Thermography

While some wonder about insurance coverage for thermography screenings, it’s essential to recognize that while coverage may become available in the future, investing in a screening for possible cancer detection, along with learning preventive measures, is an investment in your ultimate well-being now! The cost of not having this screening could significantly outweigh any initial hesitations.

There are numerous ways to save on thermography or even have your scan expenses covered. You can utilize your HSA or FSA cards, take advantage of our generous referral program for your loved ones and colleagues, or explore Aflac’s cancer prevention program.
