Visualizing Health:
The Science and Application of Medical Thermography

Medical thermography, also known as digital infrared thermal imaging (DITI), is a non-invasive imaging technique used to detect and visualize changes in skin temperature. It works by capturing infrared radiation emitted from the body’s surface and converting it into a visible image.

The basic principle behind thermography is that changes in blood flow and metabolism often manifest as changes in skin temperature. For instance, areas of inflammation or increased blood flow may appear warmer, while areas with reduced blood flow may appear cooler.

Medical thermography is used in various medical fields, including:

  • Breast health: Thermography is used to detect changes in breast tissue temperature that may indicate the presence of abnormal blood vessel patterns associated with breast cancer.
  • Pain assessment: Thermography can be used to assess musculoskeletal injuries and chronic pain conditions by visualizing areas of inflammation or abnormal blood flow.
  • Vascular health: It can help in assessing vascular disorders by detecting changes in blood flow patterns and temperature distribution.
  • Neurology: In some cases, thermography is used in neurology to evaluate conditions such as complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS) by assessing temperature differences between affected and unaffected limbs.
  • Oral Health: Thermography can assist in detecting potential areas of oral infection or conditions such as temporomandibular joint disorder (TMJ) by identifying areas of inflammation in the jaw.

Medical thermography is non-invasive and radiation-free, making it an extremely valuable health assessment tool. However, it’s important to note that while thermography can detect temperature differences, it does not provide a definitive diagnosis on its own. It is often used in conjunction with other diagnostic tests and clinical evaluations to provide a comprehensive assessment of a patient’s condition.

What to expect during your thermography appointment

  • Preparation: Once you schedule your appointment, you will receive a confirmation email with new patient intake forms to fill out and protocols to follow. The protocols advise to avoid certain activities that could affect your body temperature, such as vigorous exercise, consuming caffeine, or using lotions or creams on the skin prior to the appointment.
  • Arrival: When you arrive for your appointment, you’ll check in with reception and wait for your technician to bring you back to be seen.
  • Procedure: Before the thermography scan begins, your technician will explain the procedure to you. You’ll discuss what will happen during the scan and go over your medical history and main concerns.
  • Acclimation: Prior to the exam, you’ll acclimate to the temperature in the exam room. You’ll be asked to remove any jewelry, clothing, or items that could interfere with the imaging process.
  • Imaging: During the thermography scan, you’ll be positioned in front of the thermography camera or imaging device. The technician will guide you through the process, ensuring that the necessary areas of your body are properly imaged. The imaging itself is painless and non-invasive.
  • Post-Imaging: After the imaging is complete, you may resume your normal activities immediately. There’s no downtime or recovery period associated with thermography.
  • Results: Your thermography images will be analyzed and interpreted by a team of doctors known as Thermologists. Your results will be ready within 3-5 business days. You will review your results with a doctor and your technician.
  • Follow-Up: Your recommendation for your follow up exam will be noted in your report. Your follow up exams are necessary to monitor changes over time and ensure the best preventive healthcare.

Thermography Saves Lives

Many patients come to see us due to a member of their family getting a cancer diagnosis. Statistically, 80% of breast cancer cases do not have any family history. This means everyone should be utilizing Medical Thermography as a preventive screening tool.

Women who are diagnosed with breast cancer in their 20’s or 30’s are less likely to survive because there is not a standard screening for this age group in the conventional medicine model. These women often have young children and should not go without being screened due to the Mammogram guidelines that start screening women at age 40.

Thermography is an excellent analysis for people of all ages. Kids under 16 get Thermography at a significantly lower cost. Back in 2014, a technician with BTI started scanning kids in his office and found breast cancer in an 11 year old. Thermography is safe at any age and should be utilized during annual health checks. Our youngest patient is 2 and our oldest patient is 96!

Using Thermography to monitor and improve your health is an excellent tool for your preventive care journey.

Frequently Asked Questions

Our Certified Thermography Technicians follow specific protocols for your screening:

The room will be between 68-72 degrees and no direct sunlight.

Thermography is performed ideally in the nude (thong or jockstrap is ok but not preferred to check the skin temperature everywhere) because clothing and hair obstruct heat signatures. Privacy screening can be requested for men.

Acclimation takes about 10 minutes in a private room without your clothes on. Your clothing holds heat on your body and we need the acclimation so your skin can cool to the proper temperature. This allows for us to take images of your true skin surface temperatures.

For adults we offer 3 screening types:

Breast, Health Screening and Full Body

The Full Body Scan is the most comprehensive option and is recommended for your first exam.

This screening option includes 30 images of the entire body, head to toe. Additionally, Thermography is non-invasive, radiation-free and no-contact, so it is an excellent option for your annual holistic, preventive screening!

The Health Screening includes 20 images of the torso, from the pubic region up to the top of the forehead, covering all your major organs. It excludes the arms, hands, legs and feet.

The Breast Screening includes 6 images of the breasts and is recommended for women who have had a Full or Upper Body Scan previously and are interested in a comparative screening of just the breasts.

Appointments take approximately 30 minutes to an hour depending on which screening option you choose. We begin by reviewing your intake forms and discussing your main concerns. The acclimation takes 10 minutes followed by the screening which takes another 5-10 minutes.  Then we schedule your phone review, process payment, and make sure to answer any other questions you may have.

After your screening, we submit your images to our team of trained PACT Thermologists for interpretation. When the report is ready, you may schedule a consultation with a doctor of your choice.

You’ll have a second review with your Technician which will focus on ways to improve your results for your next exam. Our goal at Radiant Thermography is to ensure you are equipped with the tools to improve your health so you can thrive!

If you are seeking a doctor who understands Thermography, we can connect you with a local practitioner who uses Thermography in their office on a regular basis. We are also happy to help your doctor become educated on Thermography if they have an interest in learning.

Our standard report turnaround time is consistently 3-5 business days. We offer a STAT service for anyone who has a pressing matter 2-3 business days turnaround at no additional cost.

*Please note: Delays for turnaround time can be due to Holidays or an extremely busy season.

Thermographic Wellness, our team of interpreting doctors, will send an email notification as soon as your report is ready. You can then access your report via the patient portal. You may download your report and share it with your doctor or team of practitioners as you wish.

The interpreting doctors will include your follow up recommendation in your report. Most often, after your initial baseline scan, a 6 month comparison screening is recommended. Then, if your comparison looks stable and consistent, an annual recommendation is made.

*In some cases of concern, findings may warrant a follow up in 1 month, or 3 months.

Prioritize Your Health with Thermography
